Inspiration for Those who Mess Up. Repeatedly.

People who know better, do better.”  Have you heard this saying?  It’s from Maya Angelou, who was a sage among us mere mortals, and it was popularized by Oprah.  I think it means that in any given area of life, people won’t do better until they’re educated in that area.  We can forgive ourselves for mistakes we’ve made when we realize we just didn’t know how to act right.

But what happens when we do know better, and we still don’t do better?  I’ve been asking myself that question a lot lately, as I struggle with some familiar shortcomings.  I’ll just look up one day and think, “My God, haven’t I already conquered this?!?”  If you are even remotely self-aware, you might begin to notice that when you go astray it’s down a very familiar road.  There are the same stumbling blocks, the same places you’ve been bruised before.  Possibly, you too find yourself walking that dark and dreary road in spite of believing that you’ve already conquered this area of struggle in your life, that God has enabled you to move past this issue or temptation.  For me, I can get so discouraged when I realize that my negative attitude is repeatedly an issue for me.  Maybe for you it’s relational drama, food, anger, or a sexual sin.  What I have noticed is that we don’t all just “do better” even after we struggle, go to God, learn how to behave better, and move on.  Sometimes we find ourselves, against our better judgment, repeating the same old stuff, different day.

I’m not immune from discouragement here, but I do have a few thoughts and I wanted to share them in case you ever find yourself in this scenario.  First, I know God works with us through our issues, even when we repeat them time and time again.  Just as he doesn’t always offer immediate cures for physical illness, he doesn’t always heal our psychological hang-ups after our first bout either.  Sometimes, he is allowing us to continue to grow by showing us there is more work to be done.  Sometimes, he is humbling us and preventing pride from leading to a greater fall.  Sometimes, we haven’t genuinely asked for healing.  Sometimes, he wants us to seek him more, or teach us about a specific type of prayer, or show us any number of truths.  I’m not advocating dwelling on past issues if you are truly over them (if you are, great!  Praise God!)  but I am saying this: you are not alone in repeating yourself.

A second thought here: perhaps, in the places where we struggle most, it isn’t so much about knowing as it is about doing.  Do you struggle with envy?  With attitude? With pride?  Be intentional about asking God to give you contentment, to soften your harsh mindset, to make you humble.  Your shortfalls are guideposts to where your character needs work; use them to direct your prayers for God’s intervention in your life.  Then simply do.  Once you have done better once, it becomes something you can practice and it gets easier over time.  And once you have done better, you can know better because the truth will play out in your own life and give you wisdom.

I’m reading a study right now by Dick Woodward called A Spiritual Compass.  Woodward points out that Jesus himself advised us to first do and then to know.  In John 7:17 Jesus tells us to obey the instructions of the word of God, and then see if by obeying we can tell whether they are true.  That’s shorthand for letting your actions lead you to faith.  Don’t stop trying, because each small victory makes it easier to grasp, deep in your heart where change “sticks,” that the path of righteousness is superior to our chosen path of sin.

Finally, please don’t be discouraged when you try and fail.  I say when, not if.  You are a person, and this is a process.  When I was working as a child advocate I had to learn to meet parents where they are.  I couldn’t meet with a single mom who hadn’t even graduated from high school, who lived in public housing and struggled with addiction, and expect her to be the role model her kids needed.  It was enough to just make sure the kids were safe at home; I couldn’t expect her to have deep insight into why they were acting out or to recognize the importance of curfews or tutor them in algebra.

Similarly, I believe God meets us where we are when we earnestly seek him.  And because we are human (meaning flawed) we may have to earnestly seek him from the same sinful place over and over, broken in self-disgust, humbled by our inability to “do better” this time.  The good news?  He meets us there.  I know, because he has met me here, time and again.  I hope that you can be encouraged to know you’re not alone and no one is perfect: don’t give up!  Seek him, and keep on doing better.

Neutral Summer Mantel

Hey friends:) So, my summer mantel isn't groundbreaking and you won't see a bunch of new stuff here (isn't shopping your house so hip?).  In fact, a few of these elements were around the last time I showed you a summer mantel, but I still thought you might want to take a peek at what I pulled together.

The big change is that I pulled that mirror from elsewhere and have decided it will stay there permanently for now.  I like it up there and think it is seasonless, so we will see.  I tend to tire of things in the same place for long.  I brought in my orange and gold pillow for a (small) bit of color, and moved my plant onto the hearth.

Then I filled in with beachy accents, and my photo of a carousel, which just screams "summer" to me.

I love it because it is summery without calling a ton of attention to itself.  We'll leave all that attention-grabbing to the spring and Christmas mantels, those loud-mouths.

Space Week!

Hey peeps!  It's Space Week around here, and I just wanted to pop in and show you the craft we've been working on.

Puffy Paint Moons!

This is some super gooey fun!  Also a good chance to practice handwriting:

It's great because it has engaged the boys for a couple of days: first day we made the puffy moons, second day we glued them to black cardstock and decorated around them using a silver pen and adhesive foam stars.

FYI, I got the idea for the moons and used the recipe from No Time for Flashcards.  It's 1/2 cup of glue and 1&1/2 cups of shaving cream.  I cut circles out of cardboard before applying the puffy paint, just thought that would be easier.

I've also done some cute lunch and snack ideas: sandwiches cut with moon and star-shaped cookie cutters, and rockets made out of crackers and cheese.  I didn't take pictures of either one because some weeks I'm just a bad blogger. Bad, but not terrible, because aren't these moons so cute?

Sprucin' Up for Summer

At the new house we have a back deck which I have basically neglected since we moved in last September. For what seemed like ages, I had my old kitchen table out there but no chairs to sit in!  Fortunately I found a bench and chairs recently at World Market (then waited for the coordinating cushions to go on a massive sale...I love World Market sales!)

My mom donated furniture that didn't fit on her new back deck when she moved, so with a few lights hung and some cute touches, we're in business!

Remember my birdcage planter?  It's now hanging here:

Confession: this free piece of lumber I found in our garage wasn't pressure treated!
Which equaled immediate warping and failure to support my string lights.  I have since replaced it with a pressure-treated 2x4.
I will be planting live plants in these containers soon.  What kind should I do?
Just in time for summer!  In the future I will be replacing the throw pillows and getting an outdoor rug, maybe an end table next to the loveseat.  But y'all know me, it is always a process.  For now I am enjoying the improvements over this:

What it looked like with the previous owners.  What a difference furniture makes!

I'm not a Foodie, but...

Y'all, can we just talk about food for a sec here?  Although I don't think of myself as a "foodie," I relish the chance to eat my way through every vacation, and I love restaurants of all varieties.  I do street food and I do fine dining: basically, I love to eat. So, we recently had a chance to go to the most amazing restaurant, and I just have to brag a bit here because I happen to know the Executive Chef, Marc Taylor.  This was our first time there, and I was so impressed I have to share!  If you are ever in the tidewater area, please do not miss the chance to eat at Fire and Vine.

Among the appetizers we got were the flatbreads, which were delish!  But please do not leave without trying the Truffled Gnocchi & Cheese, which was so good it should be illegal.  The charcuterie platter is also super impressive and features meats cured in-house.

Our main courses included (clockwise from top left) Stuffed Quail, the 16 oz Ribeye, Shrimp & Grits, and the 72 Hours Short Ribs.

Everything was out-of-control delicious!  In addition to exquisite food, Fire & Vine has a huge wine selection, amazing service (thanks, Joey!) and great ambiance.  To be clear: this is not a sponsored post!  I just loved this restaurant and I think everyone in the world should go.  Let me know when you do, and say hi to Marc from me!

Mommy Summer Camp: Water Week!

Last week was Water Week for Mommy Summer Camp, and once again, the theme was chosen based on existing plans.  A while back we purchased a Living Social deal for Great Wolf Lodge, so we spent two days there last week.  It was So. Much. Fun.

Waaaay more fun than our first trip, when the boys were only 3 and 5 years old.  We went on all the rides a bunch of times, and the boys spent hours in that wave pool.

Also for water week, we went to the regular pool for the first time, which was awesome.  And I made this little snack:

You may have seen variations of it on Pinterest.  I didn't get super fancy, just waited a little over an hour before sticking some Swedish Fish into my blue jello.  They weren't perfect, but I actually like that the tops look a little splashy.

If I'd had more time, here are some other fun ideas I might have tried last week:

Garden Octopus

This week the boys have an actual camp, so I am taking it easy!  Have fun with your kids this week!

Summer Fun with Themes!

We're in summer mode!  Complete with road trips, lazy days and tons of fun.  I started Mommy Summer Camp last week, kicking it off with a Pirates theme.  I am gonna be lazy this summer about blogging, but I will try and keep you updated about our themes and see if I can inspire you to try it with your kids!

All we did for Pirate week was a raid our dress-up bin:

Fix a nautical snack (found this great idea on Pinterest):

Oh, and we went to the Blackbeard Festival!  Yes, there is such a thing in Hampton, VA every year.  It was a ton of fun, and my son (who researched Blackbeard for school last year), got a picture with the pirate himself!

Just in case you're wondering, no I do not plan road trips for every theme!  What I do is see what plans we have for the summer and pick a theme to match.  It adds meaning to what we are already doing.  So...when the 4th of July rolls around, it's "Our Country" week, and when we happen to be going to meet Blackbeard, it's Pirate week!
