Littlest Boo, who I still refer to as "the baby" even though he turned two last month, wakes up before anyone else is ready.  Sometimes he wakes up before the whole world is ready.  For a long time it was 4:45, 5:00, 5:30.

Yeah, I know.

These days he usually sleeps until close to 6:00, but now that I have said that out loud I am certain he will rise for the day at 4:30 tomorrow.

Anyhoo, all those early mornings got Hubs and I into a routine of taking turns getting up with him while the other "sleeps in" until 7:00.  It actually pains me to think of 7:00 as "sleeping in," but it will probably be this way for the rest of my life, so okay.

On "my" mornings I bring the baby down and we sit on the couch cuddling and petting our cat.  It's such a sweet time, until he starts shouting at me to "Pway Twains Me!"  This is toddler-speak for "play trains with me, you slave to my every whim."  One morning recently he started shouting something else, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what it was.  "Atch Ports!"  "Atch Ports!"

Of course I forgot to check with Hubs about what he could be asking for, but I figured it out 'round about the third morning.  Turns out, "Atch Ports!" translates into "Turn on Sports Center right now, woman, just as my father does every other day."  Hmph.  Some days, I even almost do.

  1. I like this post. My sons are now 4 and 7, so luckily we are past the craziness that you describe ... HOWEVER, now that I read your post, I find myself missing (!) that special time with them. Crazy, I know. I always used to tell my husband, if I could do motherhood like a job, say 9-5, or even 8-6, or heck, I will settle for 7-7, if I could just have those other 12 hours for me to sleep (uninterrupted!) for 7 hours, go for a run, take a LONG shower, eat healthy, make myself look nice, read a newspaper or magazine for a couple minutes, etc (you get the idea), I would be such a better mommy.
It is the 24-hour-ness of the job that gets to me.

  2. @MOV: you are so right about the constant-ness of being a Mommy. It does get very draining. But I love what you said about missing the time when they were little, b/c it motivates me to not wish this time away...thanks!
